MEDICAL MALPRACTICE NOT CAUSE OF HEALTHCARE COST

Public Advocacy’s most recent report analyzed data from the National Practitioner Data Bank, which has tracked malpractice payments since 1990. The report finds that the number of malpractice payments on behalf of doctors (9,379) was the lowest on record in 2012, falling for the 9th consecutive year. The cost to the healthcare system was less than 1/10 of 1% (0.11%). Medical liability insurance premiums fell to 0.36 of 1% of healthcare costs, the lowest in a decade. Since 2003, medical malpractice payments have decreased 28.8% while national healthcare costs have increased 58.3%. What this tells us is that insurance companies are making big money along with healthcare executives and more attention needs to be focused on this and the errors of doctors, rather than medical malpractice legislation.
