Car accidents are often huge inconveniences to everyday life. Even if you aren’t injured, there’s still a big interruption in your schedule on the day the crash happened. You have to figure out what to do with your car. You have to call your insurance company, and probably the other vehicle owner’s insurance company. You have to wait for the police. You might have to wait for a wrecker to come and tow your car away, and then even wait for someone to give you a ride home.
It’s important to keep track of all of these details, though, especially if you are hurt. Writing down names, phone numbers, times, and claim numbers is essential to trying to make sense of what comes afterwards: getting your car fixed, getting it back, making sure it gets paid for promptly.
And that’s if you don’t get hurt. If you are injured, keeping track of details is even more important. If you’ve been injured in a car crash, there’s even more going on. EMS will probably visit the scene of the crash. You’ll go to an emergency room. You’ll have scans or x-rays. With any luck, that’s all you’ll have to deal with, but in some cases it’s much more involved.
If you’ve been hurt in a car crash, be sure to document every service you receive for treatment, when you were treated, and who provided that treatment. It’s important to keep track of because a) those people are going to ask to be paid for their services at some point and b) it’s a very important part of a personal injury claim.
For example, if you’re hurt in a crash and go to the emergency room via ambulance, get an x-ray, and get released from treatment that same day, there are no fewer than five people that will send you a bill: EMS, the hospital, the company that the hospital contracts with for emergency room care, and the company that handles diagnostic tests like X-rays.
And that’s just day one! Down the line, you may visit your primary care doctor, your pharmacist, a physical therapist, a chiropractor, or an MRI facility to deal with your injuries.
